Client spotlight: Malcolm and Martha Greenwood of Big Events, Inc.
‘Tis the season for family and friends, and since our entire company thrives on a family-forward culture, we wanted to share a bit of our clients’ story, husband and wife planning team Malcolm and Martha Greenwood, owners of Big Events, Inc.
Tell us a little bit about what your company offers.
“Big Events, Inc. is a full service event planning company consisting of six full time staff members plus additional support that is contracted as needed, based on the event schedule. We have two main areas of service. One is wedding planning and the other is corporate conferences and non-profit events. Both produce events here in Nashville and beyond each year.”
How did you decide you wanted to start a company together?
“Over 25 years ago Martha started her business of wedding florals and my career was evolving from the music business into planning and producing corporate events. We were working on each other’s events and writing checks to our respective businesses. Big Events, Inc., a combination of the two companies, was officially born as a result of a recommendation from our CPA, but we also enjoy working together and knew it would be a good fit for us.”
What are the best things about working with family? What are some of the challenges?
“The best part is being married to your business partner! You obviously know them better than anyone else. Martha is exceptionally creative, as well as a trained artist who loves the serenity of her oil painting class as much as she likes the activity of floral design on event days. I enjoy the details: tinkering with ideas to find solutions, looking for ways to improve logistics and thoroughly overseeing the production of events. Our skill sets complement each other and our work. The challenge came early on when we didn’t have clear boundaries between areas of responsibility. Having worked together now for over 25 years, we know and respect each other’s strengths. And our talented staff expands our abilities!”
